To be admitted to the Master’s Degree in Telecommunications Engineering programme, applicants must have obtained a bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification providing a solid grounding in the basic disciplines of engineering, namely mathematics, physics, and computer science, as well as a basic knowledge of other disciplines specific to information engineering, such as electronics and automation.
The Telecommunications Engineering programme accepts both students with bachelor’s degrees from the Politecnico di Milano and students from other Italian and foreign universities.
Admission requirements depend on the bachelor’s degree obtained, as described below.
PoliMi Bachelor Students
Students who obtain a Bachelor’s degree from the Politecnico di Milano in degrees related to the School of Industrial and Information Engineering are automatically admitted to the Master’s Degree Course in Telecommunications Engineering on the basis of their grade point average, as shown in the table below. Applications that do not meet the criteria below are evaluated individually by the admissions committee, which takes into account any additional material submitted during the application process (letters of motivation, previous work experience).

No obligations
Depending on the Bachelor’s degree programme and previous academic background, training obligations may be assigned. These consist of ad hoc courses designed to fill possible gaps in prerequisite subjects. The Master’s Degree Admission Committee has the right to require students to include one or more of the following “equalization” courses, each worth 5 credits, in their study plan:
- Fundamentals of Electromagnetic Fields
- Fundamentals of Signals and Systems
- Fundamentals of Communication Networks
Any obligation assigned are not additional courses, but courses that contribute to the minimum number of credits required for the Master’s Degree, equal to 120 credits.
The bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano offers a preparatory course for admission to the master’s degree in Telecommunications Engineering: the COMMUNICATIONS track.
The COMMUNICATIONS specialization involves a series of choices in the second and third years of the bachelor’s degree program that characterize the preparation either more towards the field of computer science or more towards the field of telecommunications. The list of common courses in the first two years can be found here. For more details, please refer to the Teaching Regulations (in Italian) for the Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering.
The admission requirements for the degree program are common to all engineering programs at the Politecnico di Milano and are available on this page. For example, below are some of the requirements for certain first-level degrees. Students interested in enrolling in Telecommunications Engineering are invited to contact the Telecommunications Engineering Coordinator for detailed advice/suggestions on how to avoid training requirements by taking preparatory courses in advance in their three-year degree program.
No obligation
Required: Fundamentals of Communication Networks
To avoid this requirement, choose the Fundamentals of Telecommunications course (from TABLE COM) in the third year of the bachelor’s degree program.
Required: Fundamentals of Signals and Systems
To avoid this requirement, you can add the Fundamentals of Signals and Systems course to your three-year study plan by contacting the Physical Engineering study plan committee.
Required: if you choose the Signals for Communications course in the third year of the bachelor’s degree program, Fundamentals of Communication Networks and Internet is required; otherwise, Fundamentals of Communication Networks and Internet and Fundamentals of Signals and Systems are required.
Required: Fundamentals of Signals and Systems
To avoid this requirement, submit an independent study plan that includes the course Signals for Communications (contact the Automation Engineering study plan committee).
Required: Fundamentals of Communication Networks
To avoid this requirement, submit an independent study plan that includes Fundamentals of Communication Networks (contact the Electronic Engineering study plan committee).
Students from other Italian Universities
Admission to the Master’s Degree program for students with a degree from an Italian university is preceded by an eligibility assessment based on curricular requirements and verification of the student’s preparedness. Applications for admission are evaluated individually by an Admissions Committee established for this purpose by the Course Council, which will base its decision on an analysis of the applicant’s academic career.

The Master’s Degree Admission Committee has the right to require the inclusion of one or more of the following “equalization” courses, each worth 5 credits, in the study plan:

For more information and details, please consult the Teaching Regulations for the Master’s Degree Course in Telecommunication Engineering at the School of Industrial and Information Engineering.
Admission procedures are established by the University for all Master’s degree programs and described on this page.
Foreign Bachelor Students
Admission to the Master of Science for students with a University qualification obtained outside Italy is subject to an assessment based on curricular requirements and on the student’s preparation.
An Admission Committee is appointed for this purpose by the Study Programme Board. The Committee will base the admission on the analysis of the candidate academic career.
For more information and details, please look at Educational Rules of Master of Science Telecommunication Engineering at School of Industrial and Information Engineering.
Admission procedures are defined by Politecnico di Milano for all MSc programs and are detailed at this page.
